Online Learning

Students learning has been improved through modern technologies, in this blog post I will go through three learning theories regarding the online sphere. The first of the three theories I will go over is behaviorism an educational theory that relies purely on observable behaviors and rewards the learner for performing the desired result. In practice this involves breaking down large tasks into small portions creating a multitude of opportunities for encouragement. The online medium does assist in providing instant rewards for students as they complete each task with a instant grade back from their work.

The second of the theories is social learning theory, this involves watching a action and then using the displayed skill to learn it. This theory is very compatible with e-learning, the observation can be performed from anywhere using a tablet to watch a video, repeated as much as needed while the student can attempt the skill multiple times at their own speed. This assists in the skill being understood.

The last of the three is cognitivism theory, the hallmark is the ideal that all humans are at different levels of mental ability and a variety of learning solutions such as videos, readings etc have different results for different students. In this E-learning is the perfect companion to this theory allowing teachers to create more individualized lessons for each student allowing them to go on their own pace.

Synchronous learning is fairly close to traditional learning, this type of online learning keeps all students in the same place during the course there is no working ahead. Typically, they are hybrid classes with online lectures and do not require as much self-teaching for the student. Asynchronous learning is more flexible in nature allowing the students to more self-direction, within each individuals learning these classes do not typically have set lectures instead opting to have prerecorded lessons pre posted throughout the semester .

Online learning can provide many unique benefits to students, but can also hold its own unique downsides. This medium allows you to interact with material at your own pace instead giving access as the course needs, it is lower cost and can require less work on a teacher once the class is set up. Unfortunately there is also downsides with the material needs of internet, electricity and a computer to work from, and a lack of access to your fellow classmates to work in groups with.

  1. Hello! You did a great job answering all the questions and providing reasoning behind each point. You really helped me learn more about each of the three learning theories, such as what they are, and giving an example. My question to you is would you rather do online learning or would you rather be in person? You did a great job!
