Student progress

This weeks post I will talk on what happens when a students engagement and progress is no longer where it is needed to be.  When a student is not participated in class anymore it can be for a variety of reasons, some due to the class structure or to personal reasons. When this happens some questions must be asked of the student to identify why they have lost focus here are some example questions that can be asked
1 I have noticed you are falling behind in class, is everything okay?
2.  I see your struggling to focus,  what can we do to help you learn?
In asking these questions and others you can identify what is causing the lack of participation and in turn get to the root of the students issue.
If the student is showing a skills deficit, there is another variety of solutions to help the student get back on target. Prior to that a teacher must identify what skills a student is missing and where they must be in private meetings with the student . After a Teacher can set up, tutoring group, peer and or one on one, extra study guides or provide material to display the material in a different way
When a student is showing a performance deficit the root cause must be identified before any solutions can be found like the other two deficits mentioned earlier. Is a student not managing their time well? Is the technology not working well? assuming it is a time management issue a teacher can provide guidance on how to manage time by helping set reminders or in the case of bigger assignments help the student set personal due dates for each stage of the work while asking them to check in with the teacher privately to keep them on track.
